Aviation Concern Virgin Atlantic is Cutting 3,150 Jobs
British airline Virgin Atlantic puts up to a third of its staff on the street and stops its flights from London’s Gatwick airport. This concerns approximately 3,150 jobs in all departments.
Due to the corona pandemic, the partner of Air France-KLM must cut costs considerably to survive.
Virgin Atlantic has already informed its personnel and unions about the intention. The company is looking for new loans and has to cut costs considerably until it can secure them.
For this reason, seven aircraft of the type Boeing 747 are also taken out of the fleet prematurely.
The move means that Virgin Atlantic will now only fly from London Heathrow. However, the company wants to keep its starting rights at Gatwick so that it can return there when the demand for air travel picks up again.
The aviation sector is particularly hard hit by the corona pandemic as it prevents most of the passenger flights from operating. Britain has also not yet announced state aid to the sector.
British Airways, Ryanair and aircraft engine builder Rolls-Royce previously announced their intention to cut 12,000, 3,000 and 8,000 jobs in the UK, respectively.
