Moldova is the first European country to receive corona vaccines from the Covax program of the World Health Organization (WHO).

The country received 14,400 doses in an initial delivery, President Maia Sandu said on Twitter.

In total, Moldova receives enough doses from the Covax program to vaccinate 1.7 million people against the coronavirus, which is about half of the population. The country wants to vaccinate 70 percent of its inhabitants.

The Covax program was set up by the WHO to also provide countries with vaccines that do not themselves have enough power to buy them on the market.

Moldova started vaccinating on Tuesday after a donation of 21,600 vaccinations from the neighbouring country Romania. Healthcare workers were the first to be punctured.
