Greta on Tea At Timmermans With Agricultural Criticism
17-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg and several young supporters will have a virtual tea with Vice President Frans Timmermans of the European Commission on Wednesday afternoon.
They want to ask him to withdraw the committee proposals for reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).
According to the Youth for Climate activists, European agricultural policy does not contribute enough to the fight against climate change. The young people have been campaigning under the hashtag #WithdrawTheCap for several weeks against the CAP, which is called CAP in English. They argue that agriculture pollutes and contributes to a loss of biodiversity.
Timmermans himself has recently also expressed his disappointment about the agreement between the member states and parliament on the agricultural policy for the next seven years. This criticism did not go down well with politicians of the European Parliament, who in a letter to his boss Ursula von der Leyen recalled the democratic development of the policy.
Timmermans is responsible for the Green Deal, the agreement with the member states and parliament to make the EU climate neutral by 2050.
In addition to the Swedish climate figurehead Thunberg, the Belgian activists Anuna De Wever and Adlade Charlier and the German Luisa Neubauer are taking part in the online meeting. In the meantime, 70,000 people have signed a petition asking the European Commission to withdraw the CAP.
