“Long Way To Go For Responsible Clothing Production”

“Long way to go for responsible clothing production.” There is still a long way to go before clothing is produced in a fully responsible manner,

concludes the annual report of the Sustainable Clothing and Textile Covenant on Monday.

14 percent of the companies that have engaged themselves to the agreement could not prove that they were sticking to the settlements.

According to the report, the remaining 78 percent are “on track” to meet the agreements made. Only 8 percent fully adhere to it.

The contract from 2016 was signed by, among others, Dutch companies such as Bijenkorf, CoolCat, Zeeman and HEMA.

The initiative does not disclose which of the signatories does not comply with the agreements.

The agreements start with the delivery of documents about the production chain and the formulation of policy on,

for example, discrimination in the workplace.

Companies also have to draw up an annual plan of progress and identify risks.

Every year that a company is registered, more steps must be taken to produce responsibly.

The basis for the contract was the collapse of a large clothing factory in Bangladesh in 2013,

in which more than 1,000 clothing workers died, and more than 2,500 were injured.

Dutch brands also produced in the factory.
