Serena Williams Withdraws from the US Open with Hamstring Injury
Tennis star Serena Williams has withdrawn from the US Open with a hamstring injury. The 23-time grand slam champion won the tournament in New York six times.
“After careful consideration and on the advice of my doctors and medical team, I have decided to withdraw from the US Open to allow my body to heal from a torn hamstring fully,” the 39-year-old American reported on social media. “New York is one of the most lovely places on earth and one of my favourite places to play. I will miss the fans. See you soon.”
Williams, who dropped to place 22 in the world ranking, has not played since Wimbledon. In the first round, she gave up in London with an ankle injury and also withdrew from the Olympics.
Williams, who will turn 40 at the end of September, has been trying to match Margaret Court’s record for some time. The Australian player won 24 Grand Slam titles in her career. Williams’ last title at a grand slam dates back to 2017, when she won the Australian Open.
Last year Williams made it to the semifinals in New York. She then lost to Viktoria Azarenka from Belarus.
The US Open starts on Monday. There are also no big names among the men. Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, among others, have unsubscribed.
