EU Wants European Cyberpolice

The European Systemic Risk Board (ESRB) has put forward a proposal for a framework in which different authorities within the EU can work together on major cyber incidents.

Its purpose is to respond to major attacks in which organizations in several countries become involved at the same time. The ESRB or European Systemic Risk Board is an independent EU body whose task is to keep the financial sector stable, among other things.

The organization now sees a significant threat in cyber attacks. A press release asks that the various supervisors within the EU work on a framework around cyber incidents.

“That will support an effective and coordinated response at the EU level in the event of a major cyber incident that crosses borders and could have a systemic impact on the Union’s financial sector,” the ESRB said.

However, in its opinion, the organization also indicates that operational and legal hurdles may still need to be considered that stand in the way of such a pan-European framework.

The advice comes after a series of attacks on European institutions, including the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the European Banking Authority (EBA). In addition, a series of MEPs and European Commissioners have also had to deal with cyber attacks.
