Russia: Border Guards Fired on in Russian Region Next to Ukraine

According to the Kursk governor, Russian border guards in the Kursk region, which borders Ukraine’s Sumi region, were shelled on Tuesday. He says border guards fired back.

Governor Roman Starovojt reports that there were no injuries on the Russian side and that no damage was caused. He told the Russian news agency RIA Novosti that fired mortar shells did not reach Russian territory.

A Ukrainian army spokesman says that he has no information about shelling near Kursk when asked. However, independent parties have not confirmed the information from Russia.

Last week, Russian authorities accused Ukraine of airstrikes on an oil depot in the Russian city of Belgorod. A top Ukrainian official denied this accusation. However, the Kremlin said events in Belgorod created unfavourable conditions for continuing peace negotiations with Ukraine.
