Social Democrats in European Parliament Want Action Against Meta and X

The Social Democrats in the European Parliament want the European Commission to speak out strongly against Elon Musk’s X and Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg’s WhatsApp.

The second-largest faction in the European Parliament finds it incomprehensible that the Commission has not yet done so. According to the S&D faction, various developments at X and Meta threaten European democracy.

It also finds it reprehensible that the Commission is not using the instruments it has at its disposal with the Digital Services Act (DSA), such as imposing fines. “Enforcing the rules is crucial to us,” said S&D MEP Alex Agius Saliba on Thursday.

Agius Saliba said the faction is concerned about recent developments in major social media platforms, such as X, Meta and TikTok. These include Meta’s plan to eliminate fact-checkers in the US and Musk’s open support for far-right parties such as the German AfD.

The party also worries about TikTok’s influence on the Romanian presidential elections at the end of last year.
