American Fighter Plane Crashed in the North Sea
A United States Air Force pilot has been missing since this morning after his fighter crashed into the North Sea at around 9:30 am local time.
A major rescue operation is underway. The pilot has still not been found.
The crash of the F-15c, stationed at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, UK, occurred at 10:30 am during a training mission.
“The cause of the crash and how the pilot is doing is currently unclear,” the Air Force writes in a press release. The plane is said to have crashed 137 kilometres off the East Yorkshire coast.
Since this morning, the British Coast Guard has been looking for the pilot with a helicopter and rescue ships. For the time being unsuccessful, Colonel Will Marshall said in a video message on Twitter.
“The pilot is still missing. We will provide updates respecting the pilot’s family.” The Colonel further thanks to the British Coast Guard for their work.
This morning the military base posted a photo on Twitter of the aircraft involved. Two other fighter jets were believed to be flying near the crashed F-15c.
RAF Lakenheath is the most extensive United States Air Force base in the United Kingdom. Thousands of American soldiers are stationed every year.
