Companies in Shenzhen Closed from the Outside World Due to Corona

Hundreds of large companies in the Chinese metropolis of Shenzhen must keep contact with the outside world limited. Electronics company Foxconn, which assembles iPhones, among other things, is only allowed to deploy personnel who stay on the factory site.

 

Other affected companies include electric vehicle maker BYD and tech companies such as Huawei and ZTE.

According to the Taiwanese Foxconn, production in Shenzhen continues as normal. The company said it was following all directions from the Chinese government. Oil company CNOOC told people to work from home as much as possible for the next week.

Shenzhen had 21 new corona cases on Sunday, slightly more than the nineteen on Saturday. Compared to other countries, those numbers are very low for a city of nearly 18 million inhabitants, but authorities in Shenzhen are concerned. China has a policy of trying to eradicate corona completely and does not shy away from harsh measures such as lockdowns.

During previous lockdowns in Shanghai, companies were also allowed to remain open through such a closed system. Among other things, a Tesla factory could produce in this way. Factories that did not have their own living quarters for employees set up part of the factory space as a sleeping place.
