Google Maps Will Soon Recommend the Most Ecological Route
With its Maps service, Google will soon always recommend the most ecological route. That is one of the innovations to the artificial intelligence service that the American internet company has announced.
“Before long, Google Maps will default to the route with the lowest carbon footprint when that route has about the same arrival time as the fastest route,” said Google Maps’ Dane Glasgow.
In cases where the environmentally friendly route could significantly increase the arrival time, we show you the relative CO2 impact of the routes so that you can choose.’
If you always want the fastest route, you can indicate this in the preferences in the settings. The company partnered with the National Renewable Energy Lab of the US Department of Energy to offer the new service.
The function takes into account, among other things, the gradient of roads and delays in traffic jams. First, the new functionality will be made available in the United States “later this year” in the apps on both Android and iOS. A global rollout will follow later.
