President Donald Trump Wishes Kim Jong-un A Happy Birthday

The American president Donald Trump has sent his birthday wishes to the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Perhaps surprisingly, given the problematic relations between the two countries about North Korea’s nuclear plans.

South Korea announced today that it had sent a birthday message from US President Donald Trump to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Kim Jong-un is said to have celebrated his 36th birthday earlier this week, on January 8.

Chung Eui-Yong, the national security director of South Korea, visited Washington last week. On his return this morning, he told reporters that Trump had asked him at a meeting at the White House to make birthday wishes to Kim Jong-un.

“The day we met, it was Kim Jong-uns birthday. President Trump remembered that and asked me to get his message across,” Chung said.

Whether it was a written message or if it contained more than just wishes for a happy birthday, he did not want to say anything.

The birthday wishes are perhaps somewhat surprising since the US and North Korea have been living at odds with the nuclear ambitions of North Korea for some time.
