Scholz: Germany Needs More Corona Rules for the Winter
According to chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz, Germany needs more corona measures “to get through the winter”.
Chancellor Angela Merkel’s likely successor has said in parliament that additional measures must be taken to reduce the many corona infections with which the country is now struggling.
“What we need now is for the country to move in one direction together so that we can get through this winter,” Scholz said in parliament. The Social Democrats (SPD) leader is negotiating a new coalition with the Greens and the liberal FDP. They have proposed new corona measures in parliament, including banning unvaccinated people from specific locations.
Merkel wants stricter measures to be taken to counter the “dramatic” rise in the number of infections. It has called for new consultations between the federal government and the leaders of the federated states. According to Scholz, it will take place next week.
Scholz has also said that more people should get vaccinated. In the country, 75 percent of the population from the age of 12 is fully vaccinated. However, teenagers in particular are reluctant. According to the government, unvaccinated people, in particular, are now becoming infected.
Some hospitals can no longer handle the influx of corona patients, especially in the country’s east. They have to transfer patients to other parts of the country. Extra corona measures are being or have already been introduced in the worst affected areas.
