TSMC Would Consider New Large Chip Factory in Arizona
The Taiwanese TSMC, the largest chip manufacturer in the world, is considering building a new large chip factory in the US state of Arizona for billions of dollars. That’s what sources at TSMC say to the business newspaper, The Wall Street Journal.
According to the insiders, the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC for short) plans to announce a decision in the coming months. The new factory would then be located near Phoenix, next to another chip factory built by TSMC.
This involves an amount of 12 billion dollars. The construction of the second facility would involve a similar investment. In addition, the US government offers subsidies for more chip production domestically.
TSMC is a heavyweight in the sector and includes Apple’s main chip supplier. The new plant indicates that the company remains positive about longer-term expectations, despite the current turmoil surrounding weakening demand for semiconductors. TSMC also has expansion plans in Japan and elsewhere in the world.
