European Commission Invests 4 Billion Euros in Cancer Prevention
The European Commission is investing 4 billion euros in the fight against cancer in the European Union.
The daily EU administration wants to reduce tobacco and alcohol consumption, more population screenings to detect cancer in time and more research into new treatment methods and medicines.
“In 2020, while we were all fighting the Covid-19 pandemic, many of us waged a silent battle. The fight against cancer,” said President Ursula von der Leyen. “In 2020, we lost 1.3 million Europeans to this disease. Unfortunately, the number of cancer patients continues to rise.
That is why we are presenting this European plan against cancer.” As a 13-year-old girl, she lost her 11-year-old sister to cancer, she previously revealed.
Last year, 2.7 million EU citizens were diagnosed with cancer, according to the committee. The corona pandemic has likely left many new cases under the radar and delayed and disrupted treatments.
Without concrete measures, Brussels fears that the number of cancer patients will increase by 25 percent over the next 15 years and be the leading cause of death in the EU by 2035.
