Major Earthquake in Southwest China, One Dead and Six Injured
A 6.1 magnitude earthquake killed one in China’s Sichuan province on Wednesday. That reports state television. Six people were injured. These are provisional figures. There are landslides.
The epicentre was in Lushan district, near Ya’an city in the southwestern province.
Videos, which have not yet been verified for authenticity, show how a factory, cars and houses have been damaged by landslides.
Authorities have activated an emergency plan and sent personnel to the earthquake area. According to eyewitnesses, troops from the army were also sent.
Sichuan Province was hit by a devastating 8.0 magnitude earthquake in 2008 that killed about 80,000 people.
