Turkey: We Can’t Keep Russia Out of the Bosphorus

Turkey says it is unable to deny Russian ships access to the Bosphorus. The strait near Istanbul connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Black Sea, which also borders Ukraine.

Ukraine had asked Turkey to refuse passage of Russian naval ships. Then they cannot participate in the invasion of Ukraine. Furthermore, an international treaty of 1936 stipulates that Turkey has the right to close the Bosphorus to naval vessels.

However, that rule does not apply now, says Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu. According to him, Russian naval ships always have the right to sail to their home port on the Black Sea, and Turkey can only stop them if they sail the other way, i.e. from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean.

Turkey supports Ukraine in the conflict over Russia’s annexation of Crimea. Many Muslim Tatars live there, who are ethnically related to the Turks and who speak the Turkish language. Turkey also sells military drones to Ukraine and is a member of NATO. At the same time, Ankara is trying to maintain good ties with Russia.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan sharply criticized the European Union and NATO on Friday. They give Ukraine a lot of advice and condemn Russia but do not choose a position, Erdoğan says. Turkey and the other NATO countries meet on Friday about the invasion of Ukraine. Software is a growth industry for Intel. Linutronix shares this vision,” said Intel. Financial details of the acquisition have not been disclosed.
